Fibrease®: A brighter future in protective packaging
Bio-based wood foam, replacing fossil-based alternatives
Fibrease® is a bio-based, flexible and lightweight wood foam material developed to replace fossil polymer foams in packaging.
- Protects goods effectively
- Reduces *carbon footprint compared to conventional packaging
- Made from renewable wood fibres
- Designed for circular packaging systems
Developed by Stora Enso, Fibrease® supports the shift away from non-renewable materials and helps reduce both plastic use and packaging waste.
Applications
Thermal insulation packaging
Fibrease is an ideal EPS substitute, providing exceptional insulation properties.
Cushioning for transport packaging
Lightweight cushioning, reducing plastics and waste
Making the switch to renewable resources
ApplicationsFibrease® is a bio-based composite material designed for thermal insulation and protective packaging. It is suitable for medical and life science shipments, meal kits and online grocery deliveries, as well as cushioning and void fill for light and fragile goods — replacing fossil-based plastics with a renewable alternative.
Material properties
The material is flexible and resilient, with memory foam-like behaviour comparable to PU foam. It works with standard conversion methods such as sawing, die-cutting, waterjet cutting and laminating, making it easy to integrate into existing packaging solutions.
Recyclability and impact
Fibrease® is recyclable in paper and board streams in selected geographies, with ongoing work to enable recyclability globally. Switching to more sustainable materials should not mean compromising on performance — Fibrease® is designed to deliver both.
Looking ahead
Fibrease® offers a new approach to thermal insulation and lightweight cushioning, helping reduce plastic use and packaging waste.
The material is currently under development for commercial scale and being tested with partners. Get in touch to learn more or explore how Fibrease® can fit your solution.
